"I’ve arrived in London without incident. There are few triumphs in my recent life, but I count this as one. My existence of the last three years has been nothing but incident.”

The Year is 1883 and Emma M. Lion has returned to her London neighborhood of St. Crispian's. But Emma's plans for a charmed and studious life are sabotaged by her eccentric Cousin Archibald, her formidable Aunt Eugenia, and the slightly odd denizens of St. Crispian's. Emma M. Lion offers up her Unselected Journals, however self-incriminating they may be. Armed with wit and a sideways amusement, Emma documents the curious realities of her life at Lapis Lazuli House.

What I liked

The writing is so witty and engaging. Emma is such a lovable protagonist! She has the most hilarious quips that had me smiling and underlining like mad. At the same time, she has a depth to her that I'm excited to know more in subsequent volumes. By the end of the book, I was invested in Emma's plight.

The style of this book is cosy, after the tradition of Anne of Green Gables, Little Woman, and Jane Austen's books.

What I didn't like

I couldn't quite get into the book until about halfway through. I know this book is an introduction to the characters and world, but it felt like only a third of a story. All set-up, and when it seemed like things were going to start happening, it ended.

Overall

This book is perfect for the autumn weather. It's easy to read while not sacrificing depth. I'm looking forward to reading more. There is no plot, just vibes.

Who would like this: readers who prefer vibes over plot, who appreciate witty writing, lovable characters.
